The Attic Ascent

The Attic Ascent is a remarkable reinvention of a traditional single-family dwelling with a small basement, transformed into a contemporary two-unit back-to-back residence. The concept was driven by flexibility: the property can operate as two independent apartments, each with its own living program, or as one expansive home, a versatility not often seen in conventional housing models.

The design emphasizes adaptability and transparency, integrating subtle connections that allow the units to function either independently or in dialogue with one another. Aligned openings, shared light strategies, and carefully positioned staircases give the project a sense of cohesion, while fire-rated partitions and private entries ensure separation when desired. This duality, of openness and autonomy, creates a unique architectural experience.

Each unit includes a dedicated kitchen with bar seating, a spacious living and dining area, and full bathroom access, complemented by natural light through newly framed windows and dormers. The upper levels feature well-proportioned bedrooms, with layouts calibrated to balance privacy, comfort, and functionality.

Architecturally, the project retains the pitched roof silhouette of the original structure while introducing modern interventions: expanded dormer volumes, open-concept living areas, and material contrasts that enrich the dialogue between old and new. By reimagining a conventional residence into a space that can flex between single-family and multi-family use, the Attic Ascent demonstrates an innovative approach to housing typologies, blending tradition, modernity, and market-conscious design.
