From Forgotten Slope to Outdoor Sanctuary

Every home has hidden potential, but some spaces need a vision to unlock it. When our client reached out, their backyard was steep, inaccessible, overgrown, and suffering from soil runoff into the adjacent public alley. What was once a forgotten, unusable slope is now a multi-tiered outdoor living experience, engineered for longevity and built for relaxation.

Phase 1: Vision & Design

Our design team started by reimagining the topography. To turn a steep slope into usable square footage, we envisioned a multi-tiered layout with clean lines and open views. Our structural engineering team calculated soil loads and structural pressures, producing a comprehensive set of plans designed to stabilize the hillside permanently.

Phase 2: Navigating the Permitting Process

Before breaking ground, our dedicated permitting department navigated the detailed municipal review process. Beyond structural safety, we developed strict Erosion and Sediment Control plans to protect the surrounding environment and the adjacent public alley, ensuring every requirement was met.

Phase 3: Breaking Ground in Sub-Zero Conditions

Construction kicked off in December 2025. Facing freezing Washington, DC winter weather, our crews pushed forward, excavating the area, pouring structural footings, and building concrete retaining walls. Weather didn’t stop construction; soil was backfilled and stabilized while strictly adhering to continuous building and environmental inspections.

Phase 4: Custom Finishes & Craftsman Details

While structural work was underway, we collaborated with the homeowner to finalize high-end surface finishes. Once supplemental permits were finalized, we installed modern permeable pavers, built three integrated concrete planters, and set custom stairs and safety railings that preserve the open, panoramic view of the yard.

Phase 5: Seamless Delivery & Final Inspection

Every stage of the build passed municipal and environmental inspections swiftly. We wrapped up construction, clearing the canvas for upcoming landscaping that will add rich greenery, character, and depth to the space.
